The separately adjustable GMT hand makes a second time reference convenient while leaving the main time display in place. This is the operational detail to compare with a movement that jumps the local hour hand instead.
For the enthusiast
Seiko’s SBEJ009 page explicitly describes independent GMT-hand adjustment. Do not infer traveller-style local-hour adjustment merely from a GMT label. The 6R54 and date-only 6R55 share a stated 72-hour reserve, but offer different functions.
