What to know
In 2023, G-SHOCK celebrated its 40th anniversary by asking what its toughest possible watch could look like if budget and conventional manufacturing were no longer the primary limits. The answer was the G-D001, a unique watch built from 18-karat yellow gold and developed using a generative-design process in which human engineers and AI tools repeatedly refined the case's organic structure.
The open, skeletal forms of the case and bracelet were not styling applied to a conventional G-SHOCK. They grew from an effort to distribute impact loads through the solid-metal architecture without the conventional resin cushioning that usually forms part of the G-SHOCK formula. The complexity demanded lost-wax casting, precision machining and meticulous hand polishing. This is the rare G-SHOCK where the manufacturing story becomes as interesting as its digital-era heritage.

The dial reveals a layered analog solar-powered radio-controlled quartz mechanism, while Multi Band 6 calibration, dual time, chronograph functions and 20-bar resistance bring recognizable Casio utility to a strikingly unconventional shell. At 45.1 mm across, the design balances an expressive three-dimensional case with a wearable wristwatch format.
Only one example was made. Offered at Phillips in New York in December 2023 to benefit The Nature Conservancy, it sold for $400,050 including buyer's premium. The G-D001 demonstrates that G-SHOCK's commitment to impact resistance can be an experimental design platform rather than simply a recipe for affordable utility.
