Already weathered: Montblanc's quartzite-washed Iced Sea 0 Oxygen

A watch that looks decades old when it leaves the factory is a provocative proposal, particularly from a luxury brand. Montblanc makes the idea unusually literal with the Iced Sea 0 Oxygen reference MB137541: it applies a black coating to the steel case and bracelet, then distresses that finish with hard quartzite collected from Mont Blanc. The resulting irregular dark-grey surface echoes the crevasses across its grey glacier-pattern dial.

The practical specification is far more conventional. This is a 41mm automatic diver with a ceramic unidirectional timing bezel, screwed crown, date aperture and 300 metres of water resistance under the ISO 6425 standard. Calibre MB 24.17 offers about 38 hours of reserve, and an adjustable bracelet makes the 12.9mm-thick case comfortable to fit.

The caseback shows an iceberg and diver rather than an exposed movement. In one sense that is appropriate: this is a watch about the experience of its surface. Montblanc turns simulated wear into a material narrative rather than pretending the marks have been earned.
