Montblanc's Rieussec chronograph turns the 1821 racetrack into a dial

The new Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec pays tribute not simply to a watchmaker but to a specific 1821 event. A horse race at Paris's Champ-de-Mars inspired Nicolas Rieussec's original instrument for recording elapsed time with ink. The 2026 watch brings the imagery of jockeys and horses to a rich brown dial, whose lower twin counters echo the original rotating recording discs.

Inside the 43mm steel case is Montblanc's manufacture automatic Calibre MB R200 monopusher chronograph, with a second-time-zone indication. Rather than use a familiar arrangement of three subdials and two pushers, the visual focus is on the turning chronograph discs and a central timing pointer. Engravings on the flange recall the Paris Academy of Sciences, which recognised Rieussec's design.

The leather strap's lining reproduces a nineteenth-century map of Paris, while its pointed profile draws inspiration from Montblanc's fountain-pen nibs. Limited to 821 pieces in reference to the historic year, the model demonstrates that historical narrative can shape a watch's interaction rather than remain a superficial print.
