Pierre Paulin Retro ’70s Panda: a hand-wound column-wheel chronograph for less

Vintage-style chronographs usually invite comparison with expensive heritage references, but the Pierre Paulin Panda White makes a different proposition: a compact manual-winding chronograph in a traditional racing-watch layout. Two black counters interrupt the white dial, while a surrounding black tachymeter track and applied baton markers provide visual structure.

The 38mm stainless-steel case measures roughly 14mm thick and 46mm lug to lug, with a 20mm strap opening and 50m stated water resistance. Inside is Merkur’s Sea-Gull TY29/ST19-family hand-wound column-wheel chronograph movement, running at 21,600 vibrations per hour, with running seconds and a 30-minute elapsed-time counter. The watch uses two conventional pushers to operate the chronograph.

Merkur listed the White Panda around US$229 in October 2026. Multiple colour and strap variants exist, so buyers should verify the exact configuration. The appeal lies less in novelty than in bringing the satisfying ritual of a real mechanical chronograph into affordable watch collecting.
