What to know
Cartier's Tank is one of the great achievements of early twentieth-century watch design. The Tank Louis translates a recognizable rectangular silhouette into an exceptionally restrained composition: parallel vertical brancards, softened edges and a beaded crown tipped with a blue sapphire cabochon.
Reference WGTA0211 is particularly striking because of its yellow-gold case and golden sunray dial. Without the usual pronounced Roman numerals, the dial becomes an exercise in reflections and proportions. A black alligator strap provides a deliberately sharp contrast.
Its medium case measures 33.7 by 25.5 mm and is only 6.6 mm thick. Inside is Cartier's hand-wound calibre 1917 MC, a fitting mechanical choice for a watch whose design is closely associated with 1917.
This is the opposite of the maximalist all-gold sports watch: the precious metal reinforces a carefully controlled architectural form rather than announcing its presence through weight or scale.
