What to know

G-SHOCK's square silhouette dates to 1983, but the GMW-B5000TVA-1 from 2021 feels like a piece of equipment brought back from the future. Casio turned the metal 5000 case into a graphic technical drawing, placing labels, arrows, button indicators and deliberately exposed engineering features across the bezel and bracelet.

The case is titanium rather than the steel associated with most full-metal squares, then finished in a matte black diamond-like carbon coating. Laser-bored holes and cut-outs expose vivid red cushioning resin beneath the exterior. These details explain the watch's name, Virtual Armour, more persuasively than decorative colour alone: it presents a machine in which the user can read the materials and construction.

A 49.3 Γ— 43.2 Γ— 13 mm case and 106 g weight are particularly impressive given its full-metal construction. Tough Solar charging, Bluetooth smartphone time adjustment, Multi Band 6 radio synchronisation, sapphire crystal and a 200-metre rating support its premium tool-watch position. The fully digital display preserves the identity of the very first G-SHOCK even as the surrounding case looks entirely new.

The Virtual Armour is important because it made technical annotations into a coherent decorative language. Watches often conceal engineering within polished surfaces; this one puts its supposed schematics on display and invites the wearer to imagine how it works.
