What to know

The MR-G Gassan collaboration embodies a distinctive direction for high-end G-SHOCK: borrowing an entire craft process rather than attaching a famous name to a familiar watch. Developed with Japanese swordsmith Sadanobu Gassan, the MRG-B2000GA-1A references techniques used in Japanese sword blades and their hidden tangs.

The bezel uses recrystallised hybrid titanium, combining pure titanium and Ti64 to evoke the flowing ayasugi-hada surface of a Gassan blade. The titanium case also receives a crystalline treatment, while the bracelet carries hand-carved yasuri-me file marks and kanji inscriptions. The resulting finish varies subtly between watches. A blue-grey ion plating gives the metal a hue reminiscent of finely worked sword steel.

Beneath the extraordinary craftwork is still a highly functional electronic G-SHOCK: Tough Solar power, radio-controlled time calibration, Bluetooth pairing and 200-metre water resistance. Casio limited the 40th-anniversary model to 500 pieces worldwide, moving it into the domain of collectible Japanese applied art.

Unlike many commemorative collaborations, the Gassan MR-G is distinctive not because of its colours but because of how its components are actually manufactured and finished. In this sense, it bridges Casio's modern precision production and centuries-old handwork.
