Panerai Submersible Elux LAB-ID: the mechanical dive watch that generates its own light

First unveiled in June 2024, Panerai's PAM01800 uses six spring barrels and a mechanical microgenerator to power 160 micro-LEDs for 30 minutes—without a battery.

What to know

Originally unveiled in June 2024, Panerai's Submersible Elux LAB-ID PAM01800 remains one of the most ambitious experiments in modern dive-watch engineering. Its unusual achievement is electricity generated inside a mechanically wound watch—not to power its hands, but to illuminate them. After eight years of research in Neuchâtel, Panerai adapted its historic Elux name, once used for illuminated naval instrument panels, to a wholly different miniature lighting system.

Inside the automatic P.9010/EL calibre sit six spring barrels. Two provide a three-day running reserve for ordinary timekeeping, while four store energy for an on-demand Power Light function. Open the protected control at eight o'clock and press its pusher: stored spring energy drives a tiny generator, which converts that mechanical energy into electricity for 160 micro-LEDs across the dial, hands and rotating-bezel marker. A small indicator at six o'clock shows the lighting reserve; total illumination reaches 30 minutes.

The watch measures 49 mm and is built in blue Ti-Ceramitech, a titanium-based material with a ceramic surface. Panerai quotes water resistance of 500 metres. Luminescent pigments remain part of the design too, so the dial has a passive glow even without activating the electrically powered LEDs.

Only 150 watches were announced, supplied at 50 per year over three years. Fratello, Hodinkee and Time+Tide reported on the original 2024 launch; this is an archive addition to Chronolume's New Releases catalogue, not a claim of a new 2026 launch. Panerai's official presentation provides the technical figures and photographs.
