Omega Seamaster 2541.80: the quartz watch that launched Bond’s blue era

Pierce Brosnan’s GoldenEye Seamaster was a quartz 300M, not the later automatic. That detail makes the original 1995 watch even more interesting.

What to know

When Pierce Brosnan arrived as James Bond in GoldenEye (1995), the familiar spy acquired a different wristwatch signature: the Omega Seamaster Professional 300M. The original on-screen reference was 2541.80, with a distinctive wave-textured blue dial, blue rotating bezel, skeleton-style hands, helium-valve crown at ten o’clock and a steel bracelet that became recognisable almost as quickly as the character’s tailored suits.

The often-missed detail is its movement. The 2541.80 uses Omega’s battery-powered quartz calibre 1538; it is not the automatic Seamaster seen in several subsequent Brosnan films. Its 41 mm steel case and 300-metre water-resistance rating make it a substantial professional-style diver, whether or not Q has secretly upgraded it. The film’s gadget effects are fiction; the watch’s basic engineering is not.

Bond made a relatively attainable steel sports watch into a recurring cultural symbol. Later automatic Seamasters, Planet Oceans and other variants inherited the association, but the blue quartz 2541.80 is the reference that began it. The original is discontinued and best treated as a historical collector watch rather than a current retail release. Explore the complete movie-watch essay.
