Technik 4X Skeletor: one watch, two movements, two sources of energy

This black-and-white 44.5 mm ASD-44 genuinely pairs a Seiko/SII automatic mechanical calibre with an Epson light-powered quartz calibre on separate dials.

What to know

Technik 4X makes solar-meets-automatic watchmaking literal. The Skeletor Black/White ASD-44 splits the display into two circles: to the left, a white dial labelled SOLAR; to the right, a larger openworked dial labelled AUTOMATIC. It is not one cleverly recharged mechanical calibre. There are two independent watch movements living side by side in the same case, so each can show a different time zone.

The right-hand movement is the Seiko Instruments NH05B self-winding mechanical calibre, with a date indication and more than 40 hours of power reserve. The left is Epson's VS17A solar-quartz module, which charges a secondary cell from light and can run for roughly six months on a full charge in darkness. In the manufacturer's documentation the rechargeable cell has an expected life of eight to ten years. A stopped automatic side does not mean the solar side must stop, and vice versa.

On this black-and-white version, the mat-black IP-plated 316L stainless-steel case frames the asymmetric twin-dial display, while bright blued hands sit above luminous markers. Cut-outs let the viewer see through the watch toward its rear sapphire crystal. A black Milanese bracelet and an extra grey nylon strap are listed for this specific package. The body measures 44.5 mm across, 11.45 mm high and is rated to 5 ATM.

As an industrial-design solution, the Skeletor is frank about its engineering. Instead of camouflaging two technologies behind a conventional dial, it exposes the distinction between them and even labels each subdial. It is a current official-catalogue product, but a verified original launch date was not available; this is not claimed to be an October 2026 new release.
